Background

Nestlé, a global leader with a presence in over 192 countries, embarked on a mission to reduce waste from single-use plastics worldwide. To achieve this ambitious goal, Nestlé recognized the need to educate its vast workforce of 180,000 employees on the intricate complexities and far-reaching impacts of their petrochemical supply chain. Understanding the importance of ensuring global alignment, clarity, and collaboration on this complex issue, Nestlé partnered with Responsible Alpha, to uncover, simplify, and explain the impact their petrochemical plastics supply chain, and the associated ESG, SDG, and climate risk metrics, have on their day-to-day business.

Solution and Impact

Responsible Alpha leveraged its data framework and deep technical expertise to conduct a thorough assessment of Nestlé's petrochemical-plastics-waste supply chain. Through this analysis, Responsible Alpha described implications of this supply chain on Nestlé's overall business model, presenting key findings to finance and supply chain leadership including Nestlé's Institute of Packaging Sciences. Recognizing the importance of mobilizing the entire global workforce towards a common sustainability goal, Responsible Alpha devised comprehensive training materials. These materials, mandated by Nestlé leadership for all 180,000 employees, served to educate and empower staff to drive efficiencies and decrease waste in single-use plastics packaging.

Result

As a result of this collaboration, Nestlé witnessed a measurable increase in employee engagement and commitment to sustainability objectives, resulting in tangible improvements across the petrochemical supply chain. By fostering a culture of awareness and collaboration, Nestlé not only reduced waste and enhanced its competitive advantage but also reaffirmed its dedication to creating a more sustainable and equitable future.
