Background

Standard Chartered Bank’s mission is to position itself as a pioneer in both thought leadership and action within the realm of net zero policies. Recognizing the need for its workforce to grasp the details of climate science, policy frameworks, analytics, and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions calculations, as well as the methodologies for analyzing scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, the bank sought to equip its senior employees and above with the skills to navigate the transition to a low-carbon future. They wanted to develop their talent as professionals capable of leading the organization toward becoming industry leaders in sustainability, regardless of their job titles. With the belief that every role within the bank should contribute to climate action, Standard Chartered Bank partnered with Responsible Alpha to develop an extensive educational course tailored to delve deep into transition strategies for achieving a low-carbon, sustainable, and equitable future.

Solution and Impact

With Mennta Energy Solutions, formerly The Oxford Princeton Programme, a firm that addresses the knowledge gaps of over 100,000 energy and finance professionals throughout the world with innovative and proven training techniques, Responsible Alpha designed a comprehensive educational course that addressed all aspects of corporate transition strategy. The course empowered participants to integrate transition strategies into their daily work routines. Throughout the training, which focused on the Global Association of Risk Professionals Sustainability and Climate Risk certificate material, financial leaders gained proficiency in climate science; climate risk, sustainability, and ESG analytics; TCFD reporting; net-zero strategies and scenario analysis; and advising and modeling climate risk at both corporate and country levels. Through hands-on exercises and real-world case studies, participants developed a nuanced understanding of how to identify, assess, and mitigate climate risks while aligning their strategies with global reporting standards and evolving regulatory landscapes. By leveraging Responsible Alpha's integrated data framework and expertise, participants were equipped with the tools and knowledge to embed transition strategies into the fabric of Standard Chartered Bank's operations.

Results

The impact of Responsible Alpha's educational course was enduring. Over 50 individuals completed the training, emerging as leaders capable of driving climate action within their respective roles. The success of the program was underscored by Standard Chartered Bank's decision to invite Responsible Alpha back for three consecutive years to conduct the course. As a result of the training, Standard Chartered Bank now boasts a workforce—from management down—versed in climate risk analytics and proficient in implementing transition strategies. They are a perfect example of setting a mission and giving the workforce the necessary skills to execute the mission - day in and day out. The bank is now well-positioned to navigate the complexities of climate change, drive sustainable practices, and lead the financial industry toward a low-carbon future.
