Gabriel Thoumi, CFA, FRM, Certified Ecologist

Gabriel Thoumi, CFA, FRM, Certified Ecologist, LEEP AP, President and Founder, Responsible Alpha, is a thematic investment research manager with over 20 years’ experience as an award-winning ESG analyst and advisor, applying his scientific and investment technical skills to support sustainable and equitable investment strategies.

During his career he has worked at American Express, Intel Corporation, Wells Fargo, Calvert Investment, Climate Advisers, Planet Tracker, USAID, and Morgan Stanley's carbon offset startup.

Gabriel began his sustainability career in 1987 when he launched and led a local campaign that ultimately raised more than $30,000 to provide an ambulance and medical equipment to a community in need. From 1990 to 1992, he spent six months on the North Atlantic studying ocean health and climate, plastics waste, and biodiversity. He went on to graduate Phi Beta Kappa and Cum Laude from the University of Maryland and later received an MBA and MSc in Sustainable Systems from the University of Michigan.

Since then, Gabriel has been recognized as a global leader in sustainability. He has published over 100 thematic research reports employing ESG integration skills, numerous peer reviewed papers, and nearly a thousand news articles on capital markets and ESG integration. He has also been keynote speaker, moderator, and panelist at more than 500 conferences globally. 

In addition to his professional work, Gabriel is an dedicated educator and public servant. He teaches Sustainable Finance as an adjunct lecturer at Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), and has also taught at the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan and other universities. He holds the Certified Ecologist designation from the Ecological Society of America and the LEED AP credential from the U.S. Green Building Council. For nearly a decade, he served as a volunteer regional environment and energy commissioner, helping support a sustainable and just transition economy in the Washington, D.C. Metro region.

His work has been recognized with several honors, including awards from Lipper (2014), Rockefeller (2014), the Global Innovation Lab for Climate Finance (2015), and Environmental Finance (2020 and 2021). He has held fellowships with NSHMBA (2001 and 2002), the Consortium (2005), and the Erb Institute (2007).
